Seeds of Light is a community based Non-profit organization working towards uplifting the rural community of the greater Acornhoek area of South Africa. This area has been officially designated as a “poverty node” (one of the poorest regions of South Africa) and has very high numbers of orphans and other vulnerable children living in dire poverty.
Seeds of Light takes action through practical projects such as: creating food and water security, sexual health and HIV/AIDs awareness, and improving the education and health of orphans and vulnerable children.
SOL’s projects are varied and include:
Orphans and Vulnerable children: The Ekurhuleni Center for Orphans and Vulnerable Children, is a unique community-based project dedicated to providing emotional, physical, mental, social and spiritual support to orphans and other disadvantaged children whose parents are not able to care for them due to illness and extreme poverty.
Creativity: Seeds of Light runs numerous art classes (including a once a week class for children with special needs), providing these children with much needed creative outlets.
Food security programs: As hunger is still a significant problem in this impoverished area of rural South Africa, Seeds of Light is involved with many projects such as permaculture workshops, food parcel distribution and school gardens, to ensure food security for the children and their families.
Health and dignity: Seeds of Light is addressing the high incidence of teenage pregnancy and HIV infection at the schools in our area with school based reproductive health and sex education programs. The lack of sanitary supplies for girls in rural areas leads to a huge problem of school absenteeism and drop out. Seeds of Light is helping these vulnerable girls with washable and reusable sanitary pads and thus retaining the young girls dignity.
Educational support: Seeds of light is helping youth, especially girls, to improve their level of education. We are working with high achieving girls from various schools in the area with educational support (especially maths and English), leadership skills and life skills.
Seeds of Light has been active working in the area for over 12 years and has been registered as a NPO since 2006.
